The Level 3 Award in Wines is an advanced level qualification for professionals working in the wine industry and for wine enthusiasts.
For individuals seeking to delve deeper into the world of wines, this qualification provides a detailed understanding of grape growing and wine making. Upon completion you will be able to assess wines accurately, and use your understanding to confidently explain wine style and quality. Upon successful completion you will receive a WSET certificate and lapel pin, and will be able to use the associated WSET certified logo.
This course is scheduled for delivery over 12 weeks from 4 February 2025 with the exam scheduled for Saturday 3 May 2025. Two hour sessions are scheduled for delivery Tuesday nights from 6-8pm and there will be one intensive session of six hours on Saturday 5 April. Archive Academy has designed this WSET Level 3 Award in Wines course for maximum flexibility in learning. Many of our classroom based sessions may be optionally attended via videoconference however we strongly recommend in person attendance to get the most out of this course.
The Saturday intensive session and exam must be attended in person and you must be able to commit to the advertised exam date as a reschedule can not be facilitated and missing the exam for any reason will result in forfeiting and having to pay a resit fee for a future exam.

What you'll learn
Unit 1: The Theory of Wines of the World
Learning Outcome 1: Identify the principal natural and human factors in the vineyard and winery that are involved in the production of still wines of the world and explain how they can influence the style, quality and price of these wines.
Learning Outcome 2: Identify and describe the characteristics of the still wines produced in the principal wine producing regions of the world and explain how the key natural and human factors in the vineyard, winery, law and commerce can influence the style, quality and price of these wines.
Learning Outcome 3: Identify and describe the characteristics of the principal sparkling wines of the world and explain how the key natural and human factors in the vineyard, winery, law and commerce can influence the style, quality and price of these wines.
Learning Outcome 4: Identify and describe the characteristics of the principal fortified wines of the world and explain how the key natural and human factors in the vineyard, winery and law can influence the style, quality and price of these wines.
Learning Outcome 5: Demonstrate the ability to provide information and advice to customers and staff about wines.
Unit 2: The Analytical Tasting of Wine
Learning Outcome 1: Accurately describe the key characteristics of the principal still wines of the world and use the description to make an assessment of quality and an assessment of readiness for drinking using the WSET Level 3 Systematic Approach to Tasting Wine® (SAT).
Course delivery
The total qualification time for the Level 3 Award in Wines is 84 hours, made up of 32.5 guided learning hours (including the 2.5 hour examination) and 51.5 hours private study. This course will be delivered in the classroom in Belmont, Geelong with the option to attend via video-conference for some sessions. The exam and session for sparkling wines (Saturday intensive) must be attended in person.
This course is delivered on Tuesday evenings from 6-8pm starting 4 February plus one Saturday intensive session on 5 April.
Assessment
Unit 1 is assessed by a closed-book exam of 50 multiple-choice questions and a short-written answer paper. Unit 2 is assessed by a blind tasting of two wines.
The exam is scheduled for Saturday 3 May 2025.
Entry requirements
It is recommended that you hold the WSET Level 2 Award in Wines or can demonstrate the equivalent level of knowledge.
Course enrolment for WSET Level 3 Award in Wines closes one week prior to course commencement date. Please get in touch if you would like to enrol in a course with less than one week’s notice.
Please note: no refunds will be issued after the start of this course. Before that period a 75% refund is allowed if a student cancels their enrolment. A 100% refund will apply if Archive Academy cancels. If a student does not attend the exam for any reason it will be considered forfeited and an exam resit fee of $350 will apply. Please note - WSET Level 3 exams can only be scheduled to follow a course and Archive Academy reserves the right to schedule WSET Level 3 Award in Wines courses at any time that meets business needs.
