Have you ever wished you knew more about beer? Can you tell the difference between an IPA and a pilsner? A brown ale and a porter? The Level 1 Award in Beer is a beginner-level qualification for anyone interested in learning the basics about lagers, ales, sours and more. You’ll learn the foundations of beer production, styles, service, food pairing and tasting and gain the knowledge to help you explore the world of beer in greater depth.
The WSET Level 1 Award in Beer provides a great introduction to the world of beer. Learning though sight, smell and taste, you'll become familiar with a range of beer styles and how they are made.
If you work with beer, you’ll be able to answer customer queries with confidence and provide helpful recommendations. If you’re learning for fun, you’ll feel inspired to explore new styles and know how to get the most out of every glass.
The course fee includes access to the WSET Online Classroom and a remotely invigilated exam. Beer Samples Kits for the tasting exercises are available to purchase as an optional extra (see below).
Delivery
This course is a 4-week, 6 module online learning programme with educator support available for this time. The course modules should be followed in sequential order during this 4-week window. The course material should take about 6 hours in total to complete, plus revision time. Regular access and participation in the course online activities is essential for this mode of study.

This is an accredited course with a globally recognised qualification and all candidates who successfully complete the examination are awarded the WSET Level 1 Award in Beer certificate and lapel pin.
Beer samples kit (optional extra - add $110)
This starter kit includes 9 units of Australian and International beer samples to use for the following styles (please leave a note if you would like multiples of any samples);
Weissbier, American Pale Ale, International Pale Lager, Berliner Weisse, Czech Pilsner, Stout, Tripel, Dubbel, Munich helles
What's covered?
The main ingredients used to make beer
malt and other sugar sources, water, hops, yeast
The main production steps used to make beer
malting, brewing
The principles of successful beer storage, service and food pairing
Beer storage and service: keeping beer fresh, glassware, pouring keg beer, opening and pouring bottled beer, service temperature
Common beer faults: staling, light strike (skunking), bacterial infection
Food and beer: Preferences, sensitivities, interactions, application and other considerations
The characteristics of a range of key beer styles
Malt-driven styles: American or international pale lager, Munich helles, Blonde ale, Munich dunkel, Brown ale, Porter and stout, Barley wine
Hop-driven styles: Traditional Czech or German pilsner, Bitter, American pale ale, American IPA, Hazy IPA
Yeast driven styles: Weissbier, Dubbel, Tripel, Saison, Witbier
Sour styles: Berliner weisse, Geuze (gueuze)
Course delivery
Minimum 6 hours of study delivered via the WSET Online Classroom.
Assessment
There is an exam of 30 multiple-choice questions that will be sat in your own home with remote invigilation. The exam must be completed in 45 minutes and the date and time of the exam will be arranged to suit you. You can find out more about remote invigilation here

Please note: no refunds will be issued within 5 working days prior to the start of the course. Before that period a 75% refund is allowed if a student cancels their enrolment. A 100% refund will apply if Archive Academy cancels. Please note there is a re-sit exam fee of $200 if a student does not attend the exam for any reason.
